Inner smile

When we saw these pictures for the first time, they reminded us about the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa. Although you could barely notice the smile at all in these pictures, the name of this ad offered us a hint. This series of pictures named “Inner smile”, which were designed for FUJIFILM F70 camera, won the golden prize of out of home category of the 2011 Clio Awards.

Life has many inconspicuous scenes, therefore you need to have enough ability to capture the images which will reveal their hidden truths. The ad consists of three photos taken by FUJIFILM F70. By the look of their clothes and their expressions, we could know that they are attending a funeral. Each mourner looks sad and it seems that all of them express deep condolences to the dead, except one person. She also looks sad at the first glance however the little green AF frame exposes her secret. She is not sincere about the death of the decreased. Under her false sadness, she is smiling from the deep inside. The same situation happens in the rest two pictures. People actually smile in the situation which we usually do not smile at all. The second one happens in front of the boarding gate of the air port. The couple holds each other tightly. The man seems to be set out on a long journal. The woman is supposed to be sad for his leaving, however, F70 catch the moment of her “inner smile” again. We also can feel that the male with longer hair is trying his best to contain his “inner smile”. He might hold a hand of good cards and he is fighting back his cheerful emotion. Those pictures do tell us stories.

We think that the ad won the golden prize for the following reasons. At first, it selects the dark side of human nature, which is full of irony, to impress us. Instead of normally using photos of natural scenery to show the performance of cameras, the designer of this ad picks several scenes in the real life. The unique creativity makes the ad stand out and attract people’s attention.  Second, it arouses echo in target customer’s heart. Every photographer and photography enthusiast aspires to shot the best photos. And the prerequisite of an outstanding photo is that the photo can tell us a story. In other words, the photo needs to have a soul. These three pictures obviously succeeded to achieve this. Moreover, the designer use the perspective of photo taker, which implies that you could get pictures as good as these three if you use F70 camera. Thirdly, except the excellence perspectives, these pictures display the splendid performance of the camera. One of the selling points of Fujifilm F70 is its excellent auto focus performance. This ad perfectly highlights this point. Beside, these three high quality photos each focus on one advantage of this camera. The first one throws the background out of focus ideally. The second one indicates that F70 is good at handling light. The last one shows its outstanding color handling. Every photo highlights the advantages of the product appropriately.

  1. Excellent analysis! This Inner smile is really an aesthetic and innovative commercial. Although the symbols of the product--FUJIFILM F70 are shown just on the top and bottom of the pictures through very small images, we can easily receive the important information of the product. The focus rectangles and the excellent light and color performance of each picture remind us to figure out which camera took these.

  2. Wow! This isn't commercial. It's pure art!!I relate this commercial to what HP talked about JayZ and Bing's campaign. These two commercials both arouse customers’ curiosity and interests at the very beginning and then customers' attention transfer to the product itself. Great choice on the commercial. Very interesting and inspiring.

This was very interesting to observe, and I got a different interpretation of the reason for the "smiles" of the three scenarios. Perhaps our minds are forcing us to see the smile since there are brackets. If the brackets were not there, we all would simply see no expression...very interesting.

At first, not every expression is what it seems; in fact, I never noticed the inner smiles until Fujifilm pointed it out with the brackets.

The funeral scene, seeing that inner smile, to me meant that this woman would eventually find happiness after sadness (hence letting her inner smile never to be stifled)...

The couple at the airport was another interesting smile. I thought it would represent the love of a couple, despite being far away, and to always have a smile, no matter the distance.

The three playing poker I thought was the cleverest use of the brackets, especially for those of us that play poker! It's all about the poker face, and seeing a smile really shows how enthused this player is to have great cards!

    1. Interesting prespectives. Although my pointview is the same as the article presented at first, I regard your opinion as another reasonable explanation. Just like we mentioned at the beginning of the article that these pictures reminded us about the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa. Everyone might have different understandings to the ture meaning of the smile of Mona Lise. More over, your point remind me one more comment to this ad. I think a good print ad not only attract people's attention, but also make people think.

  4. Many cemaras take erally nice pictures today, so how can this FUJIFILM F70 camera stand out? At first glance, I can only find "Nice pictures". However, after pay attention to those little green marks, it actually tell stories behind the advertisement, which is really clever for FUJI to make the advertisement meaningful. Go through your accurate analysis, I come out with a "WOW" since the advertise show the "dark side of human nature", I agree with this. It is impressive enough to make me remember it!

  6. I have to admit that I could only understand this ad with your explanation and then I find it very special. But I am wondering the power of this ad because it would take time for people to understand it. What's more, we all know that positive feelings would appeal to people's heart most while the pictures of this ad are basically unpleasant. Anyway, this ad is definitely a creative ad and I like it.

  7. When I saw these pictures I do not understand the idea they want to transmit. I got that after read your article. Ad barely use the negative emotions such as sadness, dispointment and puzzled to convey the products' points because it is very hard to get positive result. However, I think this commercial is successful and impressive! Though the product is special in this special commercial, the point it stands can make us think deeply such as meaning of life rather than be influenced by these sad frames. Great job, it strikes me.

I'm having a hard time finding an image that isn't pixilated to see the 'inner smiles' close up. If the green marks weren't there, and there wasn't the description for the ad I think this would have been lost on me completely. I agree that its a truly clever campaign, and plays up the dark side of human nature (whether we admit to it or not we're all a little dark)...but it did not catch my attention quick enough to make me read in to it. I would have made the green marks bigger/bolder...or used a bolder smile on the models.

I see this advertisement as a piece of art, but I guess I don't see why it would make my buy their camera. It is very interesting, but the cognitive responses it would elicit in me would not be favorable to the product. -MCarroll

I agree the ad was creative. It did show the "dark side of human nature" and it was ironic and left me a great impression. However, for me, this is the very reason why I won't buy this camera. Judging through the model, the camera's target costumers should be the general public. Thus, I think this ad would be a little inappropriate. General people would like to catch pictures for happiness: moments of sweet 16, college graduation or family reunions. Only professionals would want to explore the human nature, and they would choose those bigger EOS cameras. In conclusion, I appreciate the creativity, but I am concerned about it if it were showing on a daily bases.

  12. The inner smile ad is very interesting and creative. From my opinion, It use an unique way to introduce its product. The camera is so good that it can have extrem clear film which can catch every detail, even people' inner emotion. I don't agree that the ad shows human dark side. It just shows that human have all kinds of emotions, and this camera can catch the truth. -----Shiqi Tao
